As one of the most colourful personalities in Indian politics, Lalu Prasad Yadav has always been in the news. Few, however, were prepared for his remarkable achievement as Railway Minister. He has turned around what was considered the most mismanaged, inefficient, debt-ridden public sector corporation in the country—the Indian Railways. So miraculous has been the revival that its example is now being cited everywhere, from corporate boardrooms in India to B-schools in the US. In less than three years, Yadav has driven the Railways into greater openness and efficiency.
